History

Origin and Inception
The Malayalee community in the United Kingdom hails from Kerala, a state in India which is located at southernmost tip of the subcontinent. Malayalees belong to the south-Dravidian linguistic subgroup. The term Malayalee (Malayali) is derived from the word Malayalam, the mother tongue of the people of Kerala. The first generation Malayalee migrants descended on the shores of UK during 1950's. In the aftermath of the Second World War several Keralites, who served The Queen in various Naval Bases and other British institutions around the world happily accepted British Nationality and chose UK as their home land.

Grassroots
The suburbs of Greater London such as Eastham and Croydon are dotted with several Malayalee socio-cultural organisations. As among the native Brits the game of cricket is playing a vital role in the life of migrant Malayalees too. The legacy of Malayalee as cricket loving community dates back to second half of the twentieth century. Cricket, as a team sports acts as a cohesive force which help the community to close it ranks. The period of 1980-84 witnessed a giant leap in the cricketing activities of the UK Malayalees as the youngsters from Eastham engaged NHS Newham General Hospital in several friendly matches. Waddon Park in Croydon also had its share of hectic cricket seasons led by Malayalees. The Malayalee cricketers are active in the domestic tournaments representing various companies and clubs. The formation of first Malayalee cricket club in United Kingdom in 1985 was the real beginning of an era. The first established Malayalee cricket team Eastham Malayalee Cricket Club (EMCC) inspired many Malayalee cricket enthusiasts in other parts of UK to float their own outfits. The Croydon Malayalee youth wing came up with their club in 1987. Though there were friendly matches aplenty in the latter half of 80s, competitive cricket among them was still a far cry.

Under the auspices of Malayalee Association of UK (MAUK) a valiant effort has been going on to bring various cricket clubs under one umbrella and to co-ordinate their activities to promote good cricket among them. With the help of Kerala Catholic Association (KCA), Kerala Cultural and Welfare Association (KCWA) they are overseeing the annual feat of Malayalee Community Cricket match. MAUK Cricket competition held in the summer of 1987 at East ham Central Park was the first competitive cricket match of Malayalees in UK. It was EMCC A Team and EMCC B Team who played the historical match.

UKMCL
We are so proud and honoured to inherit the legacy of Malayalee cricket from the late seventies. The true love and passion to play and promote quality cricket in the Malayalee Community led us to form United Kingdom Malayalee Cricket League (UKMCL) in 2004, an independent body who actively manage the needs of the growing number of Malayalee Cricket teams in the United Kingdom. To unify the entire Malayalee community Cricket UKMCL introduced the much awaited annul League format. It is the Collective effort of the Eastham, Croydon and Kent based Malayalee Cricket clubs and various Malayalee community groups in UK. UKMCL is the First exclusive Malayalee cricket League in Europe and the World's biggest Malayalee cricket League outside the Indian state of Kerala. UKMCL is a major platform for like-minded Malayalees to meet and share their common interests and has attracted unprecedented interest among both young British-born Malayalees and those who recently migrated to the UK as well as the vast number of students from Kerala. There are so many Kerala State level cricketers participating in UKMCL as well as budding young British Malayalees who play in the English County Circuit. We cherish every humble effort of everyone who contributed to this great game with great respect and gratitude.

Our Motto
Apart from promoting good quality cricket among the expatriates, we hope the game will bind us closer as a community and will help us to assert our distinct identity which upholds humanity above race, creed and language. All cricket enthusiasts in the community are looking forward to the day when a Malayalee dons the cap of England and represents UK at the international level.
